Nurse practitioner CE requirements depend on who certified you. The two national boards, AANPCB and ANCC, both run five-year cycles and both require pharmacology hours, but the totals and the extra requirements differ.
We checked these requirements against the AANPCB and ANCC websites. Rules change, so confirm with your certifying board before your renewal.
The short answer
- AANPCB (operating as NPCB) requires at least 100 CE contact hours, including at least 25 advanced pharmacology hours, plus at least 1,000 practice hours in each five-year certification period.
- ANCC requires 75 CE contact hours in each five-year cycle, and APRNs must include 25 hours of pharmacology within those 75.
- ANCC also requires a professional development activity on top of the 75 hours, and its options change for renewals submitted on or after February 1, 2027.
- Your state board of nursing sets its own CE rules for license renewal, separate from your national certification.
Nurse practitioner CE requirements by board
Here is a side-by-side look at the two national certifying boards. Each row comes from the board’s own website or renewal handbook.
| Requirement | AANPCB (NPCB) | ANCC |
|---|---|---|
| Certification period | 5 years | 5 years |
| CE contact hours | At least 100 advanced practice CE contact hours | 75 CE contact hours |
| Pharmacology | At least 25 advanced pharmacology hours, counted within the 100 | 25 hours for APRNs, counted within the 75 |
| Practice hours | At least 1,000 hours in your NP role (for the CE renewal path) | Not required on its own; 1,000 practice hours is one option for meeting the professional development requirement |
| Other requirement | None beyond CE and practice hours | Complete one professional development category or pathway in full |
| Renew by exam? | Yes, except ANP and GNP (those exams are retired) | Retaking the exam is one professional development option in the current handbook |
AANPCB recertification
The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board, which now operates as NPCB, certifies family, adult-gerontology primary care, psychiatric mental health, and emergency NPs. According to its FNP renewal handbook, certification is granted for five years, and every renewal requirement has to be completed inside that period.
You can renew by practice hours and continuing education, or by exam. The CE path asks for a minimum of 1,000 practice hours in your NP role and a minimum of 100 advanced practice CE contact hours. Practice hours can come from direct patient care, administration, education, or research, but student clinical hours don’t count.
Pharmacology hours for AANPCB
At least 25 of your 100 contact hours must be advanced pharmacology. The handbook describes this content as relating to pharmacotherapeutics, safe prescribing practices, or pharmacological management of acute and chronic conditions across the lifespan.
What counts as AANPCB CE
The handbook says CE credit must be awarded by an accredited provider, and the NPCB FAQ gives AANP and ANCC as examples. Advanced life support courses such as ACLS, PALS, and ATLS are accepted, while BLS is not. Academic coursework converts at 15 CE hours per semester credit, and up to 120 preceptor hours can count toward as many as 25 non-pharmacology hours.
NPCB has also streamlined its renewal application. The requirements are the same, but you no longer upload CE certificates when you apply. You attest that you met the requirements, and NPCB asks for copies only if you’re selected for audit. Keep your certificates for at least two years after your renewal deadline.
ANCC renewal
The American Nurses Credentialing Center renews certifications every five years, and you can apply up to one year before your expiration date. You need a current, active RN license, and only activities completed within your renewal cycle count. The details live in the current ANCC renewal handbook.
Every ANCC certificant needs 75 CE contact hours related to their certification role and specialty. NPs and other APRNs must complete 25 hours of pharmacology as part of those 75, not in addition to them. The current handbook also says at least 60 of the 75 hours must be formally approved continuing education.
ANCC professional development categories
Beyond the 75 hours, the current handbook requires you to complete at least one professional development category in its entirety. The options include academic credits, presentations, an evidence-based practice or quality improvement project (or a publication or research), 120 preceptor hours, professional service, 1,000 practice hours, an additional 75 CE contact hours, or retaking the certification exam.
What changes in 2027
ANCC published a 2027 renewal handbook that applies to applications submitted on or after February 1, 2027. The core numbers stay the same: 75 CE contact hours, with 25 in pharmacology for APRNs. The professional development piece is reorganized into three pathways.
- The additional continuing education pathway means completing 75 more CE contact hours.
- The practice pathway lets you choose 1,000 nursing practice hours, 120 preceptor hours, or 120 volunteer service hours.
- The scholarship pathway covers an EBP or QI project, presentations, publications, or research activities.
For NPs using the practice option, only advanced-level hours in your certification role and population count. If your renewal falls near the switchover, check which handbook applies to the date you’ll submit.
State boards of nursing set their own rules
National certification and your state license are separate. Your state board of nursing decides what CE you need to renew your RN and APRN license, including any topic-specific courses, and those rules vary from state to state. Some states tie APRN licensure to national certification, others add their own hours on top.
Check your state board’s website before you plan your hours, so a single set of courses can work toward both renewals where the rules allow it.
Nursing contact hours and Audio-Digest courses
NPs earn nursing contact hours, which is the unit both national boards count. Physicians earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ instead, and the two aren’t automatically interchangeable, so look for the contact hour designation on any course you take. Our AMA credit explainer covers the physician side.
Audio-Digest courses carry nursing contact hours through Lippincott Professional Development, which is accredited by the ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) and approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CEP 11749). Whether a given course counts toward your pharmacology hours or a state requirement depends on your board, so check the course materials and your board’s rules before you count it.
If you’re building up hours for your next cycle, Audio-Digest self-study courses let you study at your own pace and complete testing online. You can browse family practice, psychiatry, or all courses, including a dedicated pharmacology course.
